Digging Deeper and Science by Nature are delivering collaborative environmental education to under-served classrooms in Los Angeles and Santa Clara counties.
Children's Nature Institute's Digging Deeper: Los Angeles, and Environmental Volunteers' Science by Nature (located in Santa Clara County), were profiled by NPR affiliate KUSP, as part of their "Solutions in Education" series.
Both programs are collaborating with other local nonprofits to deliver coordinated science and outdoor education programs to underserved students. Digging Deeper works with Magnolia Elementary School and the Carson Gore Academy of Environmental Studies in Los Angeles. Science by Nature is serving the Mountain View Whisman School District in Silicon Valley.
Both collaborations are providing measureable improvement in student achievement and academic outcomes with hands-on science, taught in classrooms and on field trips, that span the school year. By working together, these nonprofit education providers are able to leverage their resources and reach a wider range of students while educating for depth.
